Pants on Fire – How to Play
A fast, funny storytelling game where you decide: is it TRUE… or are their pants on fire?
What is Pants on Fire?
Pants on Fire is a party storytelling game for groups. Each round, one player’s story is revealed and everyone else has to decide whether it’s true or whether their pants are on fire.
It works brilliantly at parties, game nights, family gatherings, and anywhere people enjoy laughing at each other’s strange life stories.
What you need
- 3–20 players
- Each player joins on their own phone
- One person creates the game and becomes the Host
- Either a saved account story library or one quick temporary story per guest
Regular players should create an account so they can keep and reuse their story library. Guests can also join a game quickly by QR code or game code and add one temporary true story just for that session.
The Host’s role
The host controls the flow of the game. They can:
- Start the game
- Open voting for each round
- Resolve the round
- Move to the next round or end the game
- See which players have guessed and view the current points list
Players write true stories about themselves in their story library. The game can also mix in false stories from the shared false-story pool.
Step 1 – Everyone writes a story
Before the game starts, each player needs at least one short true story. Account holders add stories in My Stories. Guests can add one temporary story during Quick Join. It should be:
- Believable
- Surprising
- Short (30 words max)
- Something that could plausibly be false
“I once got stuck in a lift for 20 minutes.”
“I accidentally called my teacher ‘Mum’ in Year 9.”
“A squirrel stole my sandwich in the park.”
Step 2 – The host starts a round
When everyone has stories ready, the host starts the game. Each round, the game picks the next storyteller and selects either one of that player’s available true stories or a false story from the shared pool.
The story appears on the story teller's screen and they read it to the group. Quick Join guest stories can be used in exactly the same way as saved account stories during that game.
Step 3 – Guessing time
The storyteller reads the story aloud and then the interrogation begins. When the host taps Vote Now, everyone except the storyteller votes:
- SOUNDS ABOUT RIGHT
- PANTS ON FIRE
Players try to read the room, spot lies, and bluff confidently. Some will trust their instincts, others will overthink everything – that’s where the fun is.
Step 4 – The reveal
Once everyone eligible has voted, the host resolves the round to reveal:
- Whether it was actually true
- Who guessed correctly
- The updated points shown in the player list
The player list shows points during the game, and the host can then move on to the next round.
Step 5 – Keep playing
The host starts the next round and the game continues until:
- You’ve used all the stories
- Or the group decides to stop
- Or the party descends into happy chaos
If a player runs out of available true stories for that game, the app warns them so they can add more or unhide one before their next turn.
Tips for a great party game
- Keep stories short: one or two sentences is perfect.
- Don’t overthink it: tiny, silly moments are often the funniest.
- Mix personalities: quiet players often write the best stories.
- Build a strong story library: more true stories means better rounds and fewer repeats.
- Play with snacks or drinks: everything is funnier when people are relaxed.
Example round
“I once got chased by a goose while trying to eat chips.”
Storyteller gets questioned by the other players.
Players vote SOUNDS ABOUT RIGHT or PANTS ON FIRE.
Reveal: it was true, and it was written by Sam.
Everyone who voted SOUNDS ABOUT RIGHT gets a point.
Simple, fast, funny.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an account?
No. An account is best if you want a permanent story library and plan to play again. Guests can also join a specific game without logging in by using Quick Join and adding one temporary story.
What is Quick Join?
Quick Join is the guest option for players who just want to get into the current game. You enter your name, add one true story of up to 30 words, and that story is only used for that game.
Do players need to lie?
Only during a round. Players write true stories about themselves. During a round you might need to read a false story which is generated by the game.
How long does a game take?
A typical game takes around 10–20 minutes, depending on group size and how much you chat between rounds.
Can we play with kids?
Yes, as long as the stories stay family‑friendly and the group agrees on what’s appropriate.
